In 2002, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar established the Karuna Mission Social Solidarity (KMSS) as its socio-pastoral organization, to serve the people of Myanmar. KMSS is mandated to share its vision and mission through the promotion of integrated human development, the realization of justice and peace, and the provision of welfare and relief services to the poor and the needy. KMSS has been working for the sustainable development of communities in Kachin and northern Shan State since 2002. Since the conflict resumed in 2011, KMSS has been providing humanitarian assistance to IDPs in Kachin and northern Shan in collaboration with CSOs, LGNOs and INGOs. KMSS is also one of the leading organizations in the Joint Strategy Team (JST) that has been, since 2011, at the forefront of delivering humanitarian assistance and development programming in Kachin and northern Shan, and advocating for peace, IDPs’ rights and justice.
